Pure Tone Audiometry
The Hearing Center at ExcelENT of Alabama provides pure tone testing to diagnose hearing loss in children and adults.
What is Pure Tone Testing?
Pure tone audiometry is a hearing evaluation used to determine the presence or absence of hearing loss in children and adults. If hearing loss is present the audiologist can determine both type and degree of hearing loss with this test.
What to Expect During the Pure Tone Evaluation
During the pure tone procedure, you will be seated in a soundproof room and given earphones to wear. The audiologist will test your ability to hear a variety of pitches from the faintest sounds to selected frequencies high and low. When you hear the different tones you are asked to press a button, say yes or raise your hand. Results are recorded in an audiogram. Children that aren’t able to take this test will be given a visual reinforcement audiometry or conditional play audiometry instead. This evaluation usually takes 20-30 minutes.
